Rapier

Light fighting or Rapier fighting in the SCA attempts to recreate Renaissance swordplay, using epees, foils and schlagers.  In an attempt to recreate not only the fighting, but also the spirit, rapier fighters are allowed to employ parrying devices, both soft and heavy.  These can be scabbards, candlesticks, loaves of bread, cloaks or bucklers, just to name a few.  Also, as long as certain armouring restrictions are met, there is a lot of creativity allowed in costume.

The object in rapier fighting is to touch your opponent with enough pressure to in a vital area which would kill or disable in a real duel.  Often, more points in a tournament are given for an arm or leg than for a kil.  Also known as light fighting or period fencing, rapier requires more speed and agility than strength and as such has become very popular with people who would like to join in the fighting, but are unable or unwilling to armour up in heavy armour and fight (although there are quite a few fighters who do both).

Fencers in the SCA also fence "in the round" as opposed to common fencing which is "line" fencing.  Thus fighters are allowed to circle eachother rather than conform to a runway approach utilized in modern fencing competition.

Fencing links will be added as I find them to the bottom of this page, stay tuned!
